Photographer Chase Jarvis has a great entry up on his blog (via Strobist ) about shooting POV images, photos taken from the view of a participant, rather than a sidelined observer. In his blog entry, you will find a list of equipment and techniques along with a cool video that lets you see them in action.
His method involves using a Pocket Wizard wireless transmitter and a camera trigger to fire the camera remotely. I have had some luck getting similar shots with using a USB cable to tether the camera to a laptop, although Jarvis’ method provides much more range and flexibility. For safety, you should always cable up your camera if you’re attaching it somewhere it might fall. You can find safety cables and the other equipment to try this technique at Nikoncable.com.
