Behind the Lens of a Forest Ranger

Explore Germany's Black Forest with one of its greatest chroniclers, Klaus Echle

European Badger

Echle added fill to the foreground with a Canon 550EX Speedlite in this shot taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 17–40mm f/4L lens. Exposure: 1/125 sec at f/8, ISO 400.

Wild Boar Piglets

Panning at a shutter speed of 1/40 sec, Echle emphasized the speed of these babies with motion blur. An EOS 5D MarK III was used with the 70–200mm zoom. Exposure: 1/800 sec at f/8, ISO 640.

These wee ones were hand-raised by Klaus Echle. Exposure on reversal film with a Canon EOS 3 with 100mm f/2.8 Macro Canon EF and Canon 540 EZ Speedlite was unrecorded.

Red Fox

The renowned mist of the Black Forest adds atmosphere to this silhouette. Echle used the 5D Mark II with a 70–200mm f/2.8L EF lens to make the shot at 1/125 sec and f/2.8, ISO 800.

Stock Dove Shadow

Echle demonstrates another strategy for shooting in the dim forest, below left. He used a Canon EOS-1D Mark III and 300mm f/2.8L Canon EF lens. Exposure: 1/500 sec at f/4.5, ISO 100.
