The Westcott Apollo softbox has been around since 1988 and has worked its way into the bags of quite a few photographers. Westcott is now renaming the old standby as the Apollo Medium and adding a few upgrades. It’s now made of a more durable fabric, the silver interior is more reflective, and the rib structure has changed a bit. It still measures at 28-inches and costs $149.
The first of the new additions is the Apollo Orb which is a 43-inch octobank. It has a recessed, removable front-diffusion panel and costs $129. Plus, it fits into any standard umbrella clamp, so you don’t need a speed ring or an adapter to use it with a flash.
The Apollo Strip is a 16″ x 30″ rectangular light mod designed to act as more of a rim or accent light, but you could probably get some very interesting portrait results with two or three of them surrounding the subject. It also costs $129 and doesn’t require a speed ring.
You can get more information on the Westcott website and we hope to have the new mods in soon for a hands-on.
